Following the Act of Union, which united the kingdoms of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801, the diagonal cross of St. Patrick was incorporated with the cross of St. George and the cross of St. Andrew to create the Union Flag, commonly known as the Union Jack.  This flag was flown over all British North American colonies and continued to be flown in Canada after Confederation.
